Hey everyone! It's been a while since my last post.
I just recently got back from a trip to Texas (namely, Houston and Austin). It wasn't nearly cold enough for my taste, but at least I got to wear a jacket a few times!
Traveling with dietary restrictions can be stressful, but I've found that Houston and Austin have been pretty easy to navigate while gluten free! So I've compiled a short list of some of my favorites.
VIBRANT - I've been dying to go here since I first heard about it! I actually made a point of coming here the first full day we spent in Houston. How could I resist a place that was completely gluten free, dairy free, and refined sugar free? The restaurant itself has a very sleek aesthetic, but it still manages to be warm and inviting. The food was SO GOOD. The salad rolls were tasty, the lobster spaghetti was to die for, the lamb meatballs were heavenly, and the pear almond cake was the perfect end to our delicious meal. I definitely want to try their breakfast the next time I'm in Houston!

TRUE FOOD KITCHEN - yes, I know it's a chain, but we don't have one in Hawaii. I fell in love with the bright yellow chairs and modern vibe, and the food definitely didn't disappoint. I had the spaghetti squash casserole, which was way more filling than I thought it would be! The entire menu isn't gluten free, but there were plenty of options for me. A solid choice in Houston!

Other places to check out:
PICNIK - I will never stop raving about this place. Entirely gluten free and sensitive to dietary needs, they up the ante by serving crazy delicious food. I've had both dinner and breakfast here, and loved everything. If you're like me and have been missing out on some classic gluteny food, order the chicken tenders. Seriously. I've also tried the pulled duck chile relleno, which is no longer on their menu but was pretty tasty. For breakfast, I've had the Butter Bones bone broth drink (great after a night of overindulging) and the French toast...just the right amount of sweetness and covered in tangy berries. If you live in Austin (or visit frequently) and haven't been here yet, go right now. I'm not kidding. I'll wait.
DISHES TO TRY - everything. I love the chicken tenders, and they have really good cocktails as well. And they're famous for their butter coffee!
KERBEY LANE CAFE - another Austin staple! While they don't have a separate gluten free menu, they do indicate which items can be prepared gluten free (and there's a lot of them!) They do weekly pancake specials, so I ordered the gluten free yam pancakes. Scrumptious. Next time we visit, I'm excited to try more of the menu!

Hopefully you get a chance to try some of these next time you're in Houston or Austin! If I missed one of your favorite spots, let me know, and I'll give it a try the next time I'm in Texas.
When I first started getting into the wonderful world of health and wellness about a year ago, I had never tried a smoothie bowl before. Seriously. Now, I can't imagine my life without these delicious treats! I love having a smoothie bowl with some protein in it as post-workout fuel, or with some maca in the morning for a power-packed breakfast. But my absolute favorite part of a smoothie bowl, of course, is the toppings. All. The. Toppings.
This is a recipe for a basic smoothie bowl that can be dressed up or down, depending on what you're craving! I used cauliflower (steamed first to make it easier to digest) for creaminess, and added spinach for extra nutrients. You can't taste the spinach, but don't you just feel healthier when your smoothie bowl is green?
This recipe is very simple, so feel free to add whatever nut butters, protein powders, or adaptogens you want! For this smoothie bowl, I added my favorite collagen peptides from Vital Proteins, for gut health and that hair, skin, & nails boost.
Disclaimer: Despite the cup of strawberries, this smoothie bowl is not super sweet. So if you need a little more sweetness in your bowl, you can blend in a date or add some coconut nectar (or choose sweet toppings!)
LEAN GREEN SMOOTHIE BOWL
Add all ingredients to blender and blend until smooth. Top with cacao nibs, coconut flakes, and goji berries (or whatever toppings feel right!).
That's it! Super simple, light, and yummy. Try it out, and let me know what you think!
